Speaker 2:Hello, I am David and welcome back to another Mojo Minute, and a very special one at that. The Ohio State Buckeyes and a Cinderella story win the 2024-25 college football playoff and championship. What a season for the Iowa State Buckeyes. They started out as a dominant team, then turned into the usual they can't win the big game narrative. But that wasn't the end of it. The Buckeyes proved everyone wrong by winning four straight games against top-ranked opponents and bringing home the 2024-2025 College Football National Championship. What a ride. Let's dive into this epic journey that had Buckeye fans on the edge of their seats, though, to be honest, some of them went on a full-on lunatic mode. But we'll get to that in another podcast. Today we're celebrating On a chilly January evening.
Speaker 2:Last night in Atlanta, the Buckeyes faced Notre Dame fighting Irish inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and it heated up very fast inside the dome when the clock hit zero. The scoreboard read Ohio State 34, notre Dame 23. And here's who stole the spotlight Quarterback Will Howard a transfer in from the portal, because that's the way the new college football system works was the offensive MVP, with 17 of 21 passes, 231 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Quashon Junkins was a beast, with 100 rushing yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries. Of course it wasn't smooth sailing the whole way. Ohio State raced out and built a dominant 31-7 lead, only to see Notre Dame come storming back and show that they were a very resilient team, just like they have been the whole year long. But a clutch 56-yard bomb from Howard to freshman Jeremiah Smith in the fourth quarter sealed the win and sent Buckeye Nation into a frenzy and me hooping and hollering at the top of my lungs. Sorry to my neighbors, it was certainly a Cinderella run. The win feels even sweeter since nobody expected it after we lost to our biggest rivals up north.
Speaker 2:The Buckeyes entered the playoffs as the no 8 seed in the new 12-team format and they just kept proving everyone wrong. They took down no 9 Tennessee, they stunned no 1 Oregon new 12-team format and they just kept proving everyone wrong. They took down no 9 Tennessee, they stunned no 1 Oregon, they outplayed no 5 Texas in the Cotton Bowl semifinal and they closed it out by beating no 7 Notre Dame in the final. This wasn't just about winning games, it was really about redemption. It wasn't just about winning games, it was really about redemption. After a tough, brutal regular season loss to Michigan, the Buckeyes turned that disappointment into fuel for an unforgettable playoff run.
Speaker 2:For head coach Ryan Day, this win was the ultimate mic drop. He shut down the critics. He cemented his spot in Ohio State football history, leading the Buckeyes to their ninth national title and their first since 2014,. Proved he's the guy to keep them on top. The players and the coaches went wild when Ryan Day started sprinting down the sideline and emphatically tossing his headset. And then the team gave Coach Day the classic Gatorade shower, a well-deserved celebration for the championship win. Now Ryan Day, who faced criticism, significant criticism throughout the season, he expressed relief and pride. Quote the story can now be told, and it's a fantastic one. It's about a group of individuals who overcame significant challenges, especially when many counted us out. Later on, he went in to say, went on to say in the post-game press conference we just kept fighting and that's why I coach to witness players overcome obstacles, learn valuable life lessons and achieve their dreams. That's what happened tonight.
Speaker 2:Player reactions were some were just simply without words. Following the monumental win, quarterback Will Howard expressed gratitude, saying we worked really hard to tune out the outside noise and truly. But the outside noise always has a way of bringing a team together. Defensive and Jack Sawyer shared his elation. When interviewed, he said I can't express how I feel. It's an incredible sensation.
Speaker 2:Many players took to social media to express their excitement. Carson Hensman tweeted God is so good. Hashtag national champions. Ty Hamilton simply stated national champions, national champs. Enough said, and Paris Johnson Jr posted Ohio against the world.
Speaker 2:The Buckeyes didn't just win, they broke records along the way. Their run included five wins over AP top five opponents, setting a new record in the AP poll era. Talk about making a statement. Their victory was particularly sweet for the team and the fans after facing severe doubts and tons of criticism throughout the season, especially following their loss to Michigan. The national championship win served as a powerful redemption story for Coach Day and the entire Ohio State football program. So what's next? As the confetti settles and the trophy heads home to CBUS, one thing is clear the Ohio State Buckeyes are back on top. The season wasn't just about one championship. It was about proving the resilience and talent of the Buckeye football program. For Buckeye Nation, the 2024-2025 season will forever be legendary, the year the team defied the odds, shut down the doubters and the wild, lunatic fringe and brought the title back to Columbus.
Speaker 2:The big question now is, especially for the Mojo Academy will Coach Day write the book? We really hope so. What am I referring to, you might ask? After the 2014 championship, urban Meyer wrote an incredible book above the line, and we reviewed it for the Mojo Academy. It wasn't just another football book. It broke it all down how they built the leaders, how they helped to hold everyone accountable. It was essentially a leadership book. So for Coach Day after you're done celebrating certainly after you're done celebrating, if you're listening please give your book agent a call ASAP. We need to hear the full story of this team, especially how resilience Became the rallying cry After that brutal loss to the team up north. We're all ready to read about it and most likely We'll review it. So congratulations again To the Ohio State football Buckeyes. Yes, national champions 2024. 2025. 2025. As always, folks keep fighting the good fight and we'll talk soon.
