Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Theory to Action podcast, where we examine the timeless treasures of wisdom from the great books in less time, to help you take action immediately and ultimately to create and lead a flourishing life. Now here's your host, david Kaiser flourishing life.

Speaker 2:

Now here's your host, david Kaiser. Hello, I am David, and welcome back to another Mojo Minute. Let's begin with our quote. I used to think of my obligations in series, each holding their own area. In seemingly unrelated rows were all the categories of obligation I had to attend to Work, ie making money, parenting relationships, household work, community movement and work again.

Speaker 2:

Nature is a good teacher and I have learned quite a bit about efficiency from observing it. In nature, functions aren't plotted side by side, each holding their own personal space and time. Nature accomplishes many tasks at the same time. With this in mind, I changed the way I thought about and scheduled my own life. Instead of breaking up my obligations and allotting time to each fractured component ie 20 minutes to get food, 45 minutes for some exercise, an hour to spend with my kids, four hours to produce something work-related I organized my life essentials so that the same portion of time fulfills multiple obligations. I call this way of relating time to essential tasks as stacking your life. Stacking your life how about that? I love that phrase.

Speaker 2:

Now this comes to us from a book called Movement Matters by Katie Bauman. Essays on movement science, movement ecology and the nature of movement. Now the book will have parts of it that Katie will go off the rails as she delves into the lack of movement and quote sedentarianism is responsible for much of the deforestation of the planet, as well as slavery and other places in other places. End quote as one of her sentences read throughout the book. But I will say for the good majority of the book, katie sticks to just the movement of human beings, and that's what I found interesting, especially because I have finished my own challenge of increasing my steps, my movement, over the past three months or so, by some 500 steps per week, per day. So way back in Lent, on my own journey back in February, I challenged myself to pick up my quote movement habits. I challenged myself to walk 8,000 steps per day for the first week, no big deal. The next week I increased it to 8,500 steps per day for that whole week. Then I moved on to 9,000 steps for the next week and so on until I maxed out just one week ago at 13,000 steps per day. Now I'm proud to report in my final week I walked some 90,383 steps in one week, that's 42.6 miles in one week. So before I started this challenge I was averaging roughly between 40 and 60,000 steps per week, or roughly about 20 to 25 miles per week. So now I'm way more than half half and I've doubled my walk time. Now I have enjoyed walking, uh, greater times, uh, a lot more.

Speaker 2:

But with the higher amounts of walking you do have to get some multitasking in, and that's good multitasking, not bad multitasking. You know, the bad multitasking is when you're trying to do too many things in so little time or at one time, and then you end up doing all of those things badly. You don't want to do that. So that's why I like Katie's new term of stacking your life. Now Katie goes on to tell us in the book about how this happens.

Speaker 2:

One of Katie's big things is foraging for food with her kids. She says this simple 30-minute activity allows for her to achieve some of the things she decided that were important. She gets to spend time with her family, she's moving outside, she's taking care of some basic household tasks like procuring food, and she's doing all this while engaging with her community as they pick up for and get assistance from others. So that is one of her best examples throughout the book. So how does my stacking work? Well, when I walk, I normally say the Holy Rosary in the morning. So there I'm getting in some prayer time while still exercising, and then, when I'm done with that, I'm usually listening to an audio book so I can keep learning and keep sharing these good nuggets of wisdom with you all.

Speaker 2:

So you can see, the stacking of life has many benefits.

Speaker 2:

Plus, we know the benefits of getting much needed exercise in our lives are always there.

Speaker 2:

In fact, I was able to walk in our local parish celebration for the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13th.

Speaker 2:

In that we have our annual outdoor procession from one church on the west side of town to our parish church, which is downtown. So in total we walked some roughly two miles while saying the full rosary and we had tons and tons of families join us along the way. I think the estimate was up to a thousand people joined us for that annual procession and walk. What a wonderful example and testimony for families that can come out and share their faith with a very, very hungry world searching for the truth. So in today's Mojo Minute, instead of multitasking in your life perhaps creating or stacking, as Katie tells us stacking your life you can be much more successful, much more flourishing. Perhaps you can even invite the kids on a walk around the block or around a metro park in your neck of the woods, enjoying time with your family and getting exercise, and perhaps you can offer some prayers too, all while doing some walking. If you do, you know that you'll surely be on the path to living a flourishing life. And, as always, keep fighting the good fight.
